Chapter Four CaseAnalysis


4.1 Lexical level

On the lexical perspective, Peter Newmark has pointed out that the closest translation isword for word translation. To achieve that, translators can adopt many translation strategies,such as transliteration, literal translation, conversion, and explanation the meaning of someparticular words. Some translators might also need to use transference, that is to say,translators borrow some words from the source text and move them to the target text. Here,the translator will discuss four typical translation issues on words or phrases, and the methodsused to tackle those issues in view of Newmark’s CorrelativeApproach to Translation theory.

4.1.1 Technical Term

Technical terms, or terminologies, can be words or phrases that are used to properlymark occurrence, phenomena, characteristics, relationships, and processes in the specializedfields of production, technology, science, art, and social life. Technical terms in the sourcetext including technological developments, primary mechanism employed in support ofOERs and MOOCs, and so on. Especially abbreviations of these technical terms are seeneverywhere in the source texts. To ensure the accuracy and nature of language and concept, itis necessary to carry out a rigorous quantitative analysis of the technical words andexpressions in target language. To successfully deal with the difficulties of technical terms inthe translation task, the translator carried out a comparatively detailed study on paralleltechnical theses. Some fixed expressions of technical terms were summarized and collected in the glossary, with a few examples presented as follows.

5.1 Major achievements

With the successful accomplishment of the translation practice of technical theses on openeducation, translation experience and related translation strategies and skills were graduallyaccumulated and summarized. Before analyzing difficulties and translation strategies, the translatorought to summarize the linguistic feature of the source text. The present English-Chinese translationproject are two English technical theses which are the first two chapters in the thesis collection OpenEducation: from OERs to MOOCs, noticeable characteristics exist with the source text:

1) Wide use of technical terms, abbreviated and norminalized expressions.

2) Wide use of long, complex sentences and passive voices.

Summarized from the translation practice, translation methods below are adoptable.

In terms of technical terms and other professional vocabulary, the translator is supposed to add uprelevant knowledge reserve by reading sufficient parallel texts, learn to use professional dictionariesand electronic resources, and be good at using computer aided translation tool for efficiency andconsistency. In the process of translating technical terms, the translator ought to be academicallyupright, seeking truth and being pragmatic. The specific translation strategies can be adopted such asliteral translation, transliteration, and transplantation of abbreviation.
