Chapter 1: The symptoms of schizophrenia and depressionin Yu Yuan

1.1 The manifestations of Yu Yuan’s schizophrenia

1.1.1 paranoia of persecution

Firstly, Yu Yuan has the symptoms of paranoia of persecution. Delusion is oneof the positive symptoms of schizophrenia. It occurs when an individual believessomething that is highly unrealistic to be true, and “Persecution Delusion” is one ofthe most common forms of Delusion. People with such paranoia sometimes think theyare being spied on or tortured by people they know, or by agents or other authoritieswith whom they have never had direct contact. Those delusions were shown in YuYuan. For example, even though he was with others most of the time, he was oftencareful not to be victimized. Yu Yuan couldn’t help becoming vigilant, because hewas afraid that he was being watched by someone, and he always tries to find outsome ulterior motive behind every activity and statement. Examples include that whenhe was assigned to go to Pusan with Ming’s ID tag, he once thought about throwingaway the ID tag which had his fingerprints on it, since the Americans might detect itand find out his false identity, which would thus put him into a very dangerous place. However, he was more afraid of being spied on by his former group members, soalthough he secretly felt like to disobey their orders, he chose not to do so. He alsotried to prevent others from saying anything bad about their superiors, for instance, when Bai Dajian spoke out his resentment toward his superior because the latter’simproper decision that had led to his lost of one finger, he told him not to speak thisout loud in public for fear of there might be some Party member around them whowere overseeing them and might report their hatred towards the Party.

Depressed patients’ sad feelings are not the ordinarysadness that everyone feels occasionally, but a deep, persistent pain. During his life inthe POW s camp, Yu Yuan was often caught by such homesickness as well as thesadness caused by misfit or solitude. We need to pay attention, however, that thedepressed patient usually show outstanding ambitions and energy in life before theyget ill(Susan 280). This was especially true for Yu Yuan, since he was engaged inmany of lower hand group’s work and felt rather accomplished when he finished atask and got acknowledgement from Commissar Pei or other group leaders. However, later he lost trust in the Party and his emotion experienced a huge fall down from such spiritual peak. For instance, he was once high spirited in the camp and trusted in hisleaders, he also did many things for the Party at the risk of his own life, and he evenfelt proud when he finished the tasks the Party commanded him to do. Unfortunately, due to the harsh ideological struggle in the two 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
